Water Weight Loss | Natural Diuretics
Learn To End Water Retention

Water Weight Loss

It is a fact that water pills can cause weight loss, but the real truth is that there is no such thing as aweight loss water pillsa. Why? Because, even if this were a viable method for losing weight, taking water pills to influence weight loss could be dangerous to your health.

Water pills, also called diuretics, are prescribed to people who are retaining an excess of water. These pills have the capacity to lower blood pressure, help people who suffer from edema, and relieve premenstrual, or menstrual, pain.

There are 3 kinds of water pills:

1. Loop diureticsa”diuretics that act on the ascending loop of Henle in the kidneya”tell the body to stop absorbing too much sodium.

2. Thiazidesa”a class of diureticsa”perform similarly, while coercing the body to eliminate large amounts of water, which lowers the body’s potassium stores to dangerously low levels.

3. There is a third kind of water pill as well, that combines these two pills in various degrees.

Obviously, retaining large amounts of water can equal weighing a little more. If you take water pills, you’re going to lose that extra water weight as your body returns to a regular water balance. But if you want to lose weight and you’re in good health, water pills can do horrible damage to your system, including:

a Dramatically lower your blood pressure

a Severe electrolyte imbalance

a Lasting kidney damage

It’s unfortunate, but many dietersa”desperate for a quick fix, or a diet ajump startaa”have resorted to taking water pills. What they don’t realize is that the sudden dip in the scale is only temporary, and that that weight will come roaring back once you’ve stopped taking the water pills. Even for those with legitimate medical problems, water pills are only a short-term solution.

Is endangering your long-term health and well being worth losing a couple of pesky pounds today?

If you really want it bad enough, wouldn’t the better choice be to eat less, eat healthier, and get outside and do some light cardio?

If you came to this article because you wanted to know if weight loss water pills were an option, then that’s probably not what you wanted to hear.

But it’s the truth. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is the old-fashioned, healthy way of balancing your diet and exercising regularly.

The bottom line is if you’re looking for a quick fix, you’re not going to find a good answer in water pills; if you quick and easy results, you need to take a moment and ask yourself why.

a Do you feel unmotivated to go on a areala diet?

a Are you nervous about an event that’s crept up on youa”like a wedding or a school reuniona”and you’re worried you won’t look your best?

a Are you feeling desperate because you’ve tried every diet out there, but nothing has worked?

If these sound familiar to you, you’re not alone. Everyone waits until the last moment, and then tries the most radical diet fads, and that is unsustainable.

Get out a calendar and choose a date in the future. It could be your next birthday, a loved one’s wedding, a class reunion, or even a planned vacation to the beach next summera”as long as it is something that you really want to look fantastic for.

Now is the time to get started. By starting a healthy diet and a doable exercise regimen now, it’s going to be a lot to lose the excess weight. Doesn’t that sound better than searching the Internet for weight loss water pillsa”a method that could endanger your life?

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Target water weight loss on the abdomen?
I know that targeting weight loss and spot reduction aren’t possible, but I’ve been trying to lose the last bit of water weight in my thighs, stomach and love handles. I’ve stayed on a pretty consistent diet over the past month and every area has toned down except for my midsection.

When I do cardio, is there a way I can make my mid section sweat more to eliminate more water weight? I drink plenty of water each day, so I am making sure the excess salt is removed from my body. Is there something, like wrapping ACE bandages around my body that’ll help me sweat more from that area?

    • ANSWER:
wrap yourself in saran wrap, it’s cheap and it will work just fine. ace bandages allow too much air circulation

  2. QUESTION:
I have a weight loss question about “water weight”?
I’m trying very hard to lose weight. Since last week, the scale says I’m down about 5 pounds. I know that’s more than normal to lose in a week and I’m wondering whether this is mostly water weight or if I’m losing weight so quickly because I’m 100 pounds overweight and it’s easier to lose more since I have so much to take off.

I’ve been drinking lots of water, so wouldn’t that cancel out weight loss due to water loss? Or is that just wishful thinking? :P

    • ANSWER:

  3. QUESTION:
Can I counter loss of water weight with extra sodium?
I’m on a diet. I know the first week you’re on a diet, most of the weight you lose is water weight. (Can you explain to me why that is?)

While on a diet, how long does it take for your body to reestablish a normal amount of water in it?

And most importantly, can I counter the water loss by increasing my sodium intake a bit? I don’t want the loss of water weight to obscure my actual diet progress (loss of fat).

    Thank you!

    • ANSWER:

  4. QUESTION:
They say you lose water weight first when you start dieting does drinking more water prevent water weight loss?
They say you lose water weight first so if you drink more water than you usually do then will you lose less water weight? I just don’t get how you can lose water weight when you are drinking more water than normal

    • ANSWER:
Actually, just drinking any kind of water will significantly help with weight loss.

Water helps to improve liver function. Your liver helps you metabolize and burn fat easily. But when you are dehydrated, your kidneys will have trouble functioning, and your liver will have to pick up the slack.

Now, let’s think about this for a minute…

If you were your liver, would you be more concerned with burning fat, or helping out your ailing kidneys? That’s what I thought! And that’s exactly what your liver does.

So, if you want to start your body’s natural fat-burning process, make sure you stay hydrated.

Drinking plenty of water is CRUCIAL to losing weight if you want to speed up the process.

With a healthy diet AND exercise, drinking water will help A LOT.

      Hope this helped

  5. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:

  9. QUESTION:
Is it true that water helps weight loss?
I’m wondering if it’s true that drinking lots of water helps achieve weight loss.

    • ANSWER:
It helps with your overall weight. The more water you regularly intake the less your body will tend to ‘retain’ water — which can reduce some ‘water weight’. This can improve looks depending on your current level of retention and of course lower your weight slightly.

Drinking 40Oz of water per 100lbs is recommended.. Not all at once, but split throughout the day. Staying well hydrated helps every single aspect of the body and health.

Also, yes, drinking water can promote a fuller feeling which can be a very mild appetite suppressant.

  11. QUESTION:
Diet. What is all this about water weight loss when you first strat a diet.?
When you first start a diet you seem to lose pounds very quickly and then level off. What is water weight loss? why is the body so quick to get rid of this water when you diet? If the body does not need this water since it is getting rid of it so fast, why does it keep it in the first place?

    • ANSWER:
We commonly hear about people going on this diet and that diet. Most diets demand a severe restriction of food or calorie intake. Your body will then signal to your mind that you are in a starvation mode and the body is designed to store fat for the impending famine and uses up your muscles as its energy for your activities instead of your fats….after sucking up your water reserves first….hence the big weight drop in the first week or so.

  12. QUESTION:
Does eating the minimum+lots of water= weight loss?
Hi im not fat, but i am getting there. So I was just curious, what would happen if I drank lots of water each day and only had one full meal a day? Would I lose a significant amount of weight if i did this for like two weeks?

    • ANSWER:
Most people think that trimming down the calories can alone shed off their unwanted excess. Probably this is because of the fad there is in advertising about low-calorie food products and beverages. What people don’t know is that this could be dangerous because when they decrease their calorie intake way to below the required levels, the body begins to digest the fats. Sounds good but it doesn’t actually. Burning fat requires a lot of energy. Since there is not much energy in the body to facilitate metabolism of fat, it will run at a very slow pace resulting to fatigue, illness and weak immune system.

What is better for weight loss: green tea or water?
I heard many time that green tea can help me loose weight. I have also heard that water can and is the best think you can drink. But can water make you gain more “water weight” than anything?

    • ANSWER:
Sodium makes you gain water weight, not water. Water actually flushes away water weight. Drinking cold water can help you burn calories, because it takes calories to bring the water up to your body temp, but green tea has antioxidants that help flush away impurities in your body. I would use both.

  17. QUESTION:
Are water weight loss pills safe? Can water weight loss pills be the effective step to reduce body weight?

    • ANSWER:
There’s a book called eat right for your blood type. It’s a diet but not a fad diet. The author claims that because blood cells have proteins on them and can reject organs of another blood type, then blood cells also reject foods in the same manner. Peter D’adamo put the main components of foods into each blood type and observed what occur. Some foods clumped up in some blood types while being absorbed and metabolized by other blood types. If a food is beneficial for you the blood cells use the nutrients. If a food is bad for your blood cells they clump up and you store it as fat and this causes disease. D’adamo made food list of each blood type’s beneficial, neutral, and foods to avoid. I have polycystic ovarian disease and diabetes. I’m 150 right now, but when I was at my sickest I was 190lbs because of my disease. A doctor told me to go and get that book and just work on eating from the list that my blood type likes the most. I droped 40lbs in six months without dieting. I ate as much as I wanted, but I was careful to stay away from foods on my blood types avoid list. At the time, I was to sick to exercise. I swim a mile everyday now. Swimming is a great way to exercise. I’m not strict on myself. I just make better choices. and sometimes I do have a few things from the avoid list. You dont’ have to buy the book now. Go to Peter D’adamo’s website, click on typebase4 food values. You can then click on any food you want and find out if it is beneficial or harmful to you on the page. Ask your parents what your blood type is and give it a try. The Blood type method is something that has changed my health for the better. I feel so much better when I eat the foods on the beneficial list, and my diabetes is under control. D’adamo uses food as medicine to heal the body. Look into it. By the way, I take diuretics because of a disease that I have, and short term it may help a little however you’ll gain it back as soon as you quit taking them. Long term use and they dont’ work at all.

  18. QUESTION:
Can ice tea replace ice water in weight loss?
Will I get the same weight loss benefits from drinking ice tea as from drinking ice water?

    • ANSWER:
Brewing your own at home is best…then you know exactly what goes into it.

I’ll share with you our secret recipe for delicious iced tea <:O)
      In a gallon jug:
      3 quarts of tap water
3 Lipton decaf. large tea bags. (steep for about an hour, squeeze and discard)
      1 quart apple juice
      4 ounces raspberry syrup
      Chill.

I saved about 6 water bottles. Fill them 1/3 with tea mixture and freeze (with the cap off so bottle doesn't collapse).

Ready to 'top off' with tea, cap and go anywhere...A nice cold drink...at about 100 calories per 16 ounce serving....(even less with sugar free apple juice and syrup).

So much more refreshing than ice water....and you CAN use the tea bags with caffine to jump start your morning...LOL

What are the benefits of water in a weight-loss diet?
As I mentioned before, my dad has high cholesterol and is trying to lose some weight. I heard that drinking water can help weight-loss in a number of ways, but I was wondering how it helps?
Like, does it cure bloating and flush out the system or something.
Also, my dad hates the taste of water, but he loves orange squash. Is squash just as good as water? Its sugar free and low in calories.

    • ANSWER:
I know you want to lose weight fast and easy, who doesn’t right? We all need to do it in a healthy way though, because crash diets just don’t work. Believe me, I’ve tried them all. If I did lose some weight, I put it right back on when I started eating normally again.

1-2 pounds a week is a healthy goal to lose weight. The only diet that ever worked for me is the diet solution program. It isn’t magical, it takes time and effort, so if you just want to take a pill and wake up skinny, don’t bother to check it out. Just keep dreaming! But if you really want to lose weight and feel good in your own skin, then it’s worth checking out the diet program. It really is the solution to stop the yo-yos.

It’s up to you, nobody else….

  29. QUESTION:
Why Is Drinking Water Important For Weight Loss?
Obviously I know that water is important for our bodies.. but does drinking lots of it actually aid weight loss?

    • ANSWER:
being well hydrated means you are less likely to suffer from water retention which of course can add a few pounds.

The main reason drinking plenty can help weight loss – is that many hunger pangs are actually down to thirst. By the time you actually feel thirsty (dry mouth etc) you are already dehydrated! You get pangs similar to those of being hungry first. So by drinking plenty you will probably eat less as you are less likely to get these mistaken hunger pangs.

Does drinking warm water help in weight loss? How does sauna help?
Why do people say, start ur day with a glass of warm water with lemon juice added to it? Does sipping warm water throughout the day help in weight loss? Does sitting in the sauna help in losing excess fat? Is there any food that can stimulate weight loss or help u to burn fat?

Yes, Water is 2/3 of your bodies weight. Drink 8 ,12 oz. glasses of water daily. It help the body get rid of excess weight, and make you healthier. Our bodies crave water, it’s molecules surround the fat tissues, and help them burn them off.

  31. QUESTION:
A question about water and weight loss?
I know water the benefits of water and its realtion to weight loss in the long term and general health.
However, if yopu started srinking teh correct amount of water, would you bloat? Like for a week if I started drinking water properly to begin to lose weight, would I actually loook the same at the end because of the blaoting?

I am starting a lon term weight loss plan, but I will be wearing a bikni in a week and I am slightly concerned
    I am 17ocm and 65 kilos currently

    • ANSWER:
How much water are you drinking now, and how much are you planning on drinking then? also, how big are you now?

I drink almost a gallon a day, and it does make me feel kinda bloaty towards the end of the day if I’ve been bad with it for a while. but hey, I’m a size 2-4 so I’m cool with it.

The best advice I can give you, honestly, is dont drink any water that day. You wont bloat if you dont drink (or eat, for that matter) anything while you are wearing that bikini. Dont make it a habit, but while you are starting if you absolutely need to not look bloated, its not too bad.

EDIT: ok so I converted your stats, you are almost exactly my size… 5’6 and around 140. I was that size when I was a size 2 and had a 6 pack…. so remember its not so much about how much you weigh as it is how big you are. Dont be surprised if you dont really lose alot of weight, just work on exercising and you will look amazing!

I’ve lost 14 lbs in 6 weeks (YEAH!!) but starting to worry about side effects and getting off the medication. Also concerned about what my “real” Dr will say. Comments?? Suggestions??

    • ANSWER:
My personal opinion —> get off the topomax! that medication has WAY to many sideaffects…

      http://www.topamax.com/topamax/how-topamax-may-help–what-to-expect.html

      check that out…

I was on i believe the same dose, but for migraines, and I had to get off of it because not only would it not allow me to focus, but just the list of side effects scared me…. I beleive I actually gained wieght on it…

Talk to your doctor… If you need to lose weight, then he/she will perscribe you something or more liekly help you devise a diet plan that is healthy and will not adversely effect you or any other medications you might be on…

  35. QUESTION:
Why is water good for weight loss?
Okay, so they say to drink a lot of water and that it actually helps in weight loss, but why is that? I mean scientifically.

    • ANSWER:
It helps your metabolism rise, therefore allowing you to burn more calories.
Drinking cold water burns more calories because you body must burn energy to warm the water.
Drinking water can make you feel full, allowing you to pass on unhealthy foods.

  36. QUESTION:
anyone tried the 2 day water weight loss diet?
you know the one where you drink about the number you weigh in fl oz. of water, eliminate most carbs except for fruits and veggies and get lots of protein instead, have no more than 1500mg (i might go below) of salt a day, and sweat a lottt? does it really work?

    • ANSWER:
The only way to know is to try. But you should realize it can be a little dangerous, especially long term.
However, diets work differently for each person. But this diet could be potentially dangerous in the long run.

  37. QUESTION:
When drinking water to aid in weight loss, does it matter if the water is cold or room temperature?
I have heard that drinking room temperature water is more effective in weight loss than refrigerated water. Why would it make any difference?

    • ANSWER:
Too much cold water gives me a stomach ache. I find I could drink much more water at room temperature since it won’t affect my stomach.

  38. QUESTION:
How EXACTLY does drinking water aid weight loss?
I have been dieting for the past two and have managed to cut down considerably on my alcohol comsumption and food in general. As I don’t eat between meals anyway I don’t see the point of all the water the experts say I should be drinking. I’ve tried to drink at least a litre and a half (did this for a week) but find I am peeing all the time and don’t want my work colleagues to think there is something wrong with me.I am also kept up at night with this problem and find I am tired during the day as I am not sleeping right through the night.
Thanks TONY H for your sauna suggestion but my finances wouldn’t manage 3 times a week.

    • ANSWER:
The water has many attributes to aid in weight loss. The first, and most obviously, it helps you to feel full. Secondly, especially when beginning a weight loss program, water is the single best thing to help wash out all the impurities in your body. Thirdly, when you first start losing weight, you tend to lose “weight water” first. If not replenished, this can put your body into a tail spin electrolyte-wise, therefore replacing the water is essential. It doesn’t add weight (as you know, since you are going to the bathroom all the time), it just is getting rid of all the bad things that have been storing up for awhile. Try to continue for a little while longer with the water. Your body will adjust and you will find you are excusing yourself to the bathroom less and less. Good luck!

  39. QUESTION:
Does weight loss slow after the water weight comes off?
I have been dieting the sensible way this time. I’ve just cut down my calories to a healthy amount. I’ve been dieting for about 10 days now and have lost 8 lbs! However, I figure most if not all of this is water weight. Now for the past few days I have stopped losing which is understandable (sp?) But I have gained a pound or two. Now I know the scales will go up and down in a day, but this is based on first thing in the morning. Is it possible to lose only water weight and nothing more? I’m getting discouraged.

    • ANSWER:
I lost 70 pounds though eating low fat and exercise. The first month I lost the most(ten pounds). And then the scale did not move for a couple of weeks. Then I lost an average of one pound a week for 70 weeks. Some weeks I lost a pound and a half. But the last 10 weeks or so I only lost about a half a pound a week and I had to double my walking to get that. It’s because as your body gets lighter, it doesn’t take as many calories to move it as it did when its was heavier. But the good news is that once I lost all the weight, I really didn’t have to do all that exercise to maintain it. I still walk everyday and eat right, but its not nearly the same amount of effort as losing it. I’ve kept it off for over five years.
I was really strict at reading labels and looking at the amount of fat grams per serving. Congratulations on the 8 pounds!

  40. QUESTION:
What’s the real story about water and weight loss?
Does it help or is that just a myth? Also, if it does, is it really b/c it’s supposed to make you feel full before a meal. Or does it have to do w/ most people walking around partially dehydrated so they feel hungry instead of thirsty? Some people say add it to a healthy diet and excercise, some people say stick to normal plans and add a ton of water to it.

    • ANSWER:
It makes you feel full, and it helps the kidneys.
When you give away weight, you secrete some toxic substances, and the kidneys are more tired than usual. Water helps them do their jobs easily.

  45. QUESTION:
Water & weight loss am I on the right path?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how much water you should drink if you are trying to loose weight? Also do you think that a 20-30min brisk walk at night is actually doing anything to help me loose weight?

    • ANSWER:
First, you don’t want to loose weight, you want to loose body fat. (big difference!) Ditch the scale for a while, it’s only measuring gravity. Not fitness or bodyfat. Get a bodyfat caliper. They are much better at measuring the mass that you want to reduce. Scales don’t really measure anything useful.

Eight 8-12 oz glasses of water is recommended everyday for anyone. If you live in a desert, then up this to 10-12 glasses. Water is not a replacement for food. Starving yourself is counter-productive to loosing weight! You’ll only loose muscle mass, and suffer with lower metabolism issues that lead to increased fat stores.

30 minutes of walking is great, but if you want to loose body fat, you need to make it an “aerobic” walk. This means getting your heart-rate high enough to put you in the zone in which the body looks to fat deposits for energy. Under the zone, your only conditioning muscle, and not burning fat.

To find your “zone”, measure your “resting heart rate” (RHR) when you first wake up in the AM. Just take your pulse on your neck for 20 seconds, then times this number by 3. Your Aerobic zone is typically 2x – 2.5x this number for you to burn fat. The longer you stay in your zone, the more fat you will burn… even 3-4 hours after you stopped walking!

  46. QUESTION:
Anyone ever used Diurex water pills? How safe and effective are they for weight loss?
I bought some Ive been dieting/exercising 3 months with only 10 pounds lost so im guessing might be water weight. I want to know your experience.

    • ANSWER:
Heya-I’ve used them a few times when I forgot to limit my salt intake before a photoshoot (I model) I don’t normally watch what I eat because I have a high metabolism, so before a shoot I usually make sure my meals the couple days prior are reasonable in sodium but I sometimes don’t think about it and eat chinese takeout or something and end up a bit bloated. I’ve also used them when I’m on my period. t can take off a couple lbs and you’ll look a lot thinner. Only take ONE at a time, and don’t drink anything afterwards. Any liquid you drink will reverse the effects. Do whatever you need to do and then get one of those 40 oz slurpies afterwards and you’ll be fine. Don’t go more than 8 hours or i might get uncomfortable. And don’t take another pill anytime soon-I’ve been working on the same box for over a year.

i am trying to loose as much weight possible and i read in a magazine the other day that drinkin ice water helps you loose weight because youre metabolism needs to speed up to bring it up to body temperature is this true?

    • ANSWER:
      It actually is true.
Your body has to work extra hard to warm it up to your body temperature.

  48. QUESTION:
    Water Weight?????????????
I was just wondering when u crash diet u drop weight fast right? And I know that most of this is considered ‘water weight’, well I have two questions, firstly does water weight loss show? Would u notice someone was lookgin slimmer than usual? Ans secondly, how many pounds (lbs) of weight would u have to lose before u could safely say that u were losing actual weight as in fat and not just water weight? How many lbs in water weight equals lbs in fat?? Thank youuuuuuuuu!

    • ANSWER:
If you lose a lot of water weight you skin will be thinner and you will see more definition. To make this simple in bodybuilding before competition body builders become dehydrated so there skin will be paper thin to show all definition. You can lose several pounds in water weight though. I would say if you lost % pounds though you are definitely losing weight and not just water weight.

Is water weight real weight loss?
Hi, I’m 13 years old i’m a guy i’m about 5 foot 5 I weight 127 lbs. I began drinking more water recently and noticed the scale has gone down. Is this real weight loss? I mean have I lost lbs? This this my real weight?

    • ANSWER:
motabolism and your muscles work based on different chemical reacion but both of which require water to actually make the reaction possible. you then digest faster and ur muscles are now able to work better which means burning more fatty acids (same thing as just “fat”).
the rest of the waste just goes to ur urine. so ultimately water does help you lose weight.
